How important is the goth label to you?

When I was younger, it was absolutely not cool to say that you’re goth. At all. It has become a label now with lots of hashtags. So, how important is it to you all? Do you tell people you’re goth? Is it important at all?

People today, it seems, love to have lots of micro labels, that form some type of curated identity. I know that using labels will garner likes and “engagement” online, but, what about real life? Personally, I rarely get asked and when I do, I will say something like, “Yeah, I do listen to goth music and support the scene.” I cringe a bit when I see someone wearing a shirt that says something like, “goth ghoul gang,” or something. I just wanted to see everyone else’s thoughts on the importance of the label.

Unofficial Seething Sunday

Goth gothy goth goth because this is r/goth and we are contractually obligated to post on theme all the time else it breaks some law or something, otherwise one of the other mods will kill this thread over relevancy. Do you know people sometimes report Unofficial Seething Sunday as if it will get it removed? That's funny.

What are some actual goth bands that have a doom-ey sound like HIM’s Love Metal or That Band That Shall Not Be Named On This Sub?

Yes I know they aren’t actual/proper/true goth and more like goth metal but whatever. Looking for either more specifically like that or “actual” goth with similar sound. Specifically the super dark and heavy bass and the super deep almost droning male lead vocals. And the low key auto tune shit TO- does with the vocals in some songs

I’m not really a goth or at least I don’t think of myself as one but I will say this stuff is my jam once November swings around. It’s so fitting for when all the green turns to brown and it gets dark earlier. And smoking a cigarette to this music in the depths of winter on a full moon? The world lit up by the moonlight off snow as the world is like frozen in glass? Chills

Tonight’s gonna be alright

Damn. It’s been a hell of a year. I’m laying in bed tonight, listening to Disintegration, high as Uranus. The music, and Robert Smith’s vocals, are so good together, and have a soft feeling in the ears. It’s weird.

Goth music, and the culture, has been such a help to me as I’ve been processing and getting through some really heavy shit. A breakup with a first girlfriend who I shared a plan of marriage with, several nights drunkenly calling the Trevor project hotline as I try to process other feelings, alcoholism, financial struggles, a candid look back at a life of childhood and early adulthood trauma, etc.

For the longest time, I didn’t have the words to articulate the things I felt, and I certainly didn’t know anyone who I could really talk to. That changed when I was introduced to the classics; Sisters of Mercy, The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees. I fell in love with it, and kept finding songs that described events that happened to me, or feelings I had, to the letter. I felt understood in a way I never had before. These bands have also made the only song that have ever made me cry, which is something that rarely happened until lately.

I also got to meet really interesting, awesome people going to events, and have become more comfortable expressing myself (albeit at the expense of looking GOOFY a couple of times in public with my makeup). I’ve made friends I feel safer talking to, and I think I’m starting to heal for the first time in my life. I’m not sure, but I really think so. I think I want to learn the bass now, as well.

Anyway, that’s it.

Weird question, but a genuine one

I’m not great at socializing due to anxiety, but I want to be more active in the goth scene despite it not being very large where I am. Does anybody have recommendations on how to make friends in the scene for somebody that struggles in social settings?
